He’s at war. IEDs are everywhere and his men are in danger. He is focused on the mission, but in his downtime, he can’t help but think about his family back home.
Meanwhile, she’s stuck in the middle of the desert, lonely, just trying to keep it all together. They have been through a lot this past year. More than anyone should have to go through in fact.
This is 15 Years of War and this is their story.
15 Years of War is a memoir written by Kristine Schellhaas, a Marine Corps officer’s wife. It is the story of how the longest war in U.S. history has affected her family in love, loss, and the cost of sacrifice. Never before has a book held such an accurate account of what life is like for the modern military family in such an all-encompassing way.
What makes this book unique is that this is not just another action-packed war book. It is also not just another book about military life for military spouses. What sets this book apart from all the rest is the smooth way in which it tells the tale from both perspectives: the voice of the warrior and also the one standing strong on the homefront.
He tells his story of going off to war (multiple times), leaving his family behind, and the sacrifices made by those he was serving with- many of whom gave life and limb for their country.
She tells her story of maintaining their lives on the homefront. Raising children, volunteering, strained family relationships, frequent moves, battling loneliness, making new friends, and launching her own business– all while her husband is at war.
Together, they tell their story of dealing with heartbreaking personal loss and trying to keep their marriage strong in the face of so many obstacles.
This incredible book is written in such a way that even those outside of the military community can understand and appreciate it. The jargon and military-speak is kept to a minimum and on the occasion that it is used, it is with explanation so as to not leave the reader confused. It truly gives an insiders look at what today’s military life is really like for families today.
As a fellow military spouse reading this, I laughed, I cried, I shook my head in agreement. This is only one well-written story, but it gives voice to the thousands more just like it. Because of that, it is an important part of our nations modern history as it paints a picture of just what these 15 years of war have been like for those living it.
If you are currently serving, a veteran, a military spouse, a family member of a service member, or just curious what military life is like, then I highly recommend that you read this book. It truly is an all-encompassing account of what life is like for the modern military family.
