Do you know what I LOVE? A business that’s doing good. A business that’s giving back. A business that’s making a difference.
That’s why when I was introduced to a business called Hazel and Deene (formally known as Trading Hope), I was immediately interested. Because Hazel and Deene is doing good, giving back, and making a difference.
Oh, and they have some beautiful, eye-catching jewelry too!
What is Hazel and Deene?
While working to bring freedom to women in the red light district of Kolkata, India, the founder of Hazel and Deene, Michelle McDonald Pride, was struck by the realization that those in need did not want just a handout, like many aid organizations offered. They wanted an opportunity.
Since then, Michelle has been on a mission to show the world that business can be both profitable and transformational at the same time. She is passionate about empowering women to make a difference in their own lives as well as in lives around the globe.
It was out of these desires that Hazel and Deene was born.
Here’s how it works:
- Hazel and Deene purchases large quantities of inventory direct from local artisans that are operating small-medium sized businesses on the ground in areas where generational poverty severely limits opportunities.
- Through this direct trade relationship, Hazel and Deene is able to help support these growing businesses by encouraging product development, building relationships, and guaranteeing that they are having an impact.
- Independent stylists (like my friend Heather that I’ll introduce you to in a minute) bring the beautiful products to consumers (like me and you) for us to purchase.
- Our purchases allow Hazel and Deene to keep purchasing more jewelry which in turn, allows these businesses to employ more people, earn more income, and transform lives.
It’s a beautiful cycle and a brilliant business model!
And Now…Meet Heather!
Heather is a friend of mine from college who happens to be a military spouse as well. You may remember her from this great guest post she wrote about the challenges of military life.
Heather married her husband five years ago, right after he graduated from West Point. Heather has served our country well on the homefront, taking care of their three kids while her husband trained, completed Ranger school, and was deployed overseas.
With having three kids, all under the age of four, Heather admits that she has been in a “baby fog” for the past few years. Now, though, as her youngest is almost one, Heather is ready to do something for herself. She wants it to be something meaningful and something that will help her family.
When a friend approached her about hosting a party for Hazel and Deene, Heather was skeptical at first, like many of us are about that sort of thing. But once she started researching the company, she loved the mission so much that she ended up becoming an independent stylist herself!
Heather also loves that Hazel and Deene allows her to set a positive example for her daughter. She recently shared this in a Facebook post:
I want my daughter to see in me that being cute is fun and that being fashionable is great, yet it all boils down to your heart, your mission. Hazel and Deene lets me show my girl how to combine style and grace (which is what Hazel and Deene means). It allows me to share my love of fashion with her while staying focused on the mission of creating change and doing good. I can show her what it means to work hard because you believe in something.
Let’s Make a Difference
Heather knows well the struggle that many moms, especially military spouses, face when trying to start a business. She knows that it’s hard to find someone to watch your kids and to carve out time in our busy schedules to get work done.
But through Hazel and Deene, she has become connected to a society of other moms that are encouraging and supportive. And because Hazel and Deene is such an amazing company, she knows that what she’s doing is making a difference not just in the life of her own family, but in families around the world.
By simply wearing beautiful jewelry, you can support a military spouse and help transform lives too!
