My husband and I had a dream. We wanted to move to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and help change lives in one of the cities worst areas. The problem: we were broke college kids with no jobs. Oh, and we lived in Indiana.
We filled out dozens of applications. We endured multiple interviews, some over the phone and others in-person (after a lengthy road-trip). We prayed constantly. We were confident this is what we were supposed to do, but nothing was happening.
Finally, the day before our wedding, I received an email that I had been offered a teaching position! Our dream was going to become a reality! Our adventure began and we moved to a drug-riddled neighborhood in inner-city Philly to work with an amazing ministry there called Urban Hope.
We both felt strongly we would always go wherever God decided to send us, even if it was scary. I imagined spending forever in Philly, but after doing that for only a couple of years, it became clear the next place He was sending us was to the military.
This was a huge act of faith because it required my husband to resign from his job and go to Officer Candidate School for 10 weeks. This was especially scary because I was pregnant with our first child and there was no guarantee he would make it through.
Thankfully, though, he did make it. Now he has spent the last 5 years of his life serving our country and the adventures keep on coming!
The most recent adventure for me has been the start of this blog. This was a SCARY endeavor, ya’ll! I’m going to try to say this as plainly as I can without drawing unnecessary attention to myself:
If you watch the news at all, you know there are people who hate our country and all it stands for. They want to do harm to our citizens. As a military family, it is quite possible they hate us even more than they hate everyone else. Because of this, I put off starting this blog for well over a year, even though I knew it was something the Lord was leading me to do. Nothing was more important to me than the safety of my children.
Although the safety of my children is obviously still of the utmost importance to me (which is why you won’t see their actual names here), God has reminded me that I must not live in fear and I must not allow fear to keep me from following Him. My husband doesn’t allow fear to keep him from serving our country and I’m not going to allow fear to keep me from serving my God.
To a lesser degree, I had fears of other things as well. Fear of not knowing what to say. Fear of comparing myself to others and feeling as if I didn’t measure up. Fear of stepping out of my comfort zone and sharing personal matters in a very public way (introvert over here!). Fear of giving this my absolute best but still failing.
But you know what? Despite all those fears, despite all those reasons not to start this blog, I did it anyway. And I’m loving it! I love having a project and a purpose outside of my home. I love getting to encourage each of you, and you all have already been such an encouragement to me!
I believe that when we are obeying and doing what God has asked of us, that we’re in the safest place we could be, regardless of how dangerous the situation around us may seem. I think too often we “play it safe” and only do what we feel comfortable with or what makes logical sense.
As I’ve said many times before, God’s ways are bigger than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9) and sometimes He asks us to do things we don’t fully comprehend. If we only ever do what makes sense to us or is comfortable for us, then we don’t need to rely on God because we can handle it ourselves. But when we step out in faith, into the place that seems a little bit crazy, then we are leaving room for God to show up and work in mighty ways!
So that’s what I’m doing here. I’m stepping out into the “little bit crazy” place and trusting that He is going to show up and do big things. In fact, I’m pretty sure He’s already here and at work! Thank you again to each of you for joining me on this adventure and I’d love to hear what “crazy” place God is asking you to step into. Share below!
